Technology continues to evolve as the network perimeter evaporates into the cloud and electrons become the new global currency. Enterprises are continuously challenged by an elusive and morphing cyber threat from bad actors and opportunists who use the vulnerabilities in our Information Systems as weapons. From fraudsters to nation state-sponsored cyber warfare, these attacks come at us from every direction as the ingenuity of criminal minds seek new and creative ways to infiltrate our valuable information resources and engage in cyber warfare against our businesses and our way of life--compromising our financial and national security. We are bombarded daily with newspaper headlines and digital media reports about the latest cyber security breach. This breakout session will allow our panel of Executives the opportunity to share hard won experience and best practices with the Nevada IT Symposium audience.

Chief Global Data Center Architect & Operations

Barrick Gold is the largest gold mining company in the world with mining operations worldwide. The solution they previously had for BC/DR wasn’t allowing them to meet the RTOs they required. They needed to get to very low recovery point objectives and recovery time objectives. As a result, James King, Chief Architect at Barrick Gold, knew they needed a new solution to meet their aggressive SLAs for RPOs and RTOs. As a global organization, they also wanted a solution that would allow them to migrate their data as needed.

Virtual Replication has allowed Barrick Gold to:

  • Aggressive service level requirements with RPOs of seconds and RTOs of minutes
  • RPO reduced by over 90%
  • Easily migrate VMs anywhere in the world
    • 400 VMs were migrated from South America to the US-based datacenter with ease
  • Increased the ROI of their disaster recovery investment with additional use cases

Join us to learn how Barrick Gold protects their business every day!

Projections from the DoL show that we have less than 1/3 of the people in IT programs at universities than the forecasted IT job openings in 2020.  So improving our skills around attracting and retaining is not enough - we need to work on expanding and building the workforce. What is IT doing to expand the IT workforce? The pressure is mounting for organizations to adapt to changing times, market themselves as employers of choice, anticipate workforce needs, and invest in and engage employees in meaningful ways.  IT leaders need to have a sense of urgency about the challenges and changes ahead.

Over 70% of the workforce is disengaged from their work; in other words they are there for the paycheck.  And although you may create great solutions and develop the best systems and technology, unless employees are engaged you will find that adoption of your solutions will be severely lacking.  Focusing on employee engagement may not seem like an IT responsibility, but without it too many initiatives will not meet expectations.  During this keynote you will be introduced to the 11 secrets that create engaged employees - ones that are ready to adopt your technology.

The US Army has the National Training Center. The FBI trains its best in Hogan’s Alley. The tactical training range has become the state-of-the-art training environment for practitioners, from local police forces to National Guard Army brigades, who use such experiences to hone skills and practice teamwork. Now – cyber warriors, defenders, and investigators can take advantage of the same kind of live speed, realistic training in Alphaville, which resides on the Michigan Cyber Range. With Alphaville, there is no reason to be satisfied with short term, single use, shallow training environments. In this session, you will preview a live hack on Alphaville’s infrasture which includes a financial institution, school, hospital, library etc. In this session, hackers intent on disrupting communications, stealing critical information or intellectual property, and causing mayhem will be previewed. Depicted is the real-world demanding atmosphere that strengthens team communication and documentation in addition to individual skills. Team members will hack systems, plant their flag, secure the system, and move on. Teams can attack each other, replacing one flag with an opponent’s. The team with the most flags left planted when time is called wins the exercise.
